The Goritsa hill is situated at the entrance of Pagasitikos bay. At the north is united with narrow pass to the main mountainous mass of Pilion. At the west of the hill spreads the town of Volos , while at the east the plain of Agria and Lehonia. The strategically position of the hill always secured the complete control of the plain and the sea. This was the main reason that on the Goritsa hill a town was built during the first half of the 4 th century B.C., probably when Philip B was fortificating the area of Magnesia. The fortication walls of the town were probable built by Kassandrs between 316 – 298 B.C. This fortified town was inhabited only for a short time of period and when the Ancient Dimitriada was built (294 B.C.) the never inhabited again. The name of the town is still unknown to us. It has been suggested by many scholars the identification of the town with Iolkos, Nilia, Dimitrada, Orminion. The town is built at the Southeast side of the hill and it takes up an area of about 400 acres. It has a solid planning web and it is organized in city blocks. Its planning system is called Hippodamio and according to this the town is divided in vertical and horizontal streets having a distance of about 32 meters from each other and width 4, 50 meters. The streets form 4 different types of building blocks. We assume that there were 400 – 500 houses in the town and that lived there about 3.000 – 3.500 people. The houses usually were square. At the north part there were a series of rooms and at the southern part a yard. Between the houses there were open spaces squares. At the triangular square III there is a circular and a rectangular structure probably of public domain (fig.7, 9). The systems of water supply and the drainage system of the town have both been located. The town had 3 gates entrances, the Eastern, the Western and the Northern. The defense system of the town is made with special care and was built in one building phase with a uniform plan. The walls have a total length of about 2.800 meters. They are built according to the pseudo – leveled constructing system and are reinforced by 33 towers. The most imposing and well – preserved part of fortification of the ancient town is the Great Battery 14. It is situated at the northernmost point of the fortification and today is preserves at a high of 3 meters. It consists of 2 castles in U – shape, which is united with a double brick wall. At the west part of the fortification is situated tower 29, which today is preserved at a high of 2, 90 meters. The acropolis on the top of the hill constitutes also part of the fortification. Today there stands the church of Zoodohos Pigi . The acropolis takes up an area of 135 meters length and 80 meters width. It is fortified and includes the towers 20,25. the gate of the ancient acropolis is located at the exact point where today the road crosses the wall. Outside the walls of the ancient city tombstones had been traced from the city's west and east cemetery. The church of Zoodohos Pigi on the ancient acropolis is built at the place of an older Christian temple of 18 th century. There are some indications that there was at the same place an ancient temple as well. For the construction of the church was used building material from the ancient town.
